Tell the Canadian Government to support Palestinian prisoners in 3 easy steps!

Step 1: Copy and paste text below into email

Subject Line: Support Palestinian Prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli occupation jails

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, Minister Freeland, Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, and MP [insert own MP],

As a Canadian citizen concerned with human rights in Israel/Palestine, I urge you to speak out in parliament and to pressure the Israeli government to recognize Palestinian prisoners’ demands.

Since April 17, 2017, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners are on hunger strike for their basic human rights, such as family visits, medical care, and freedom from imprisonment without charge or trial (IMEMC 2017). The strike was also launched in protest of Israel’s violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, as Israeli prison authorities systematically impose solitary confinement, humiliation, torture and cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment on Palestinian prisoners (Addameer 2015).

Israel, which continues to illegally occupy Palestinian territories, often arrests Palestinians without charge or trial. Israel is also the ONLY country in the world that automatically prosecutes children in military courts; between 500 and 700 Palestinian children per year (DCI 2015). Approximately 7,000 Palestinian prisoners, including men, women and children, sick and disabled, are incarcerated in Israeli prisons today.

A hunger strike is the utmost sacrifice a human being can offer of his own free will. The “Battle for Freedom and Dignity,” as the strike has been officially named by the prisoners, is the last resort of struggle against the abuse of human rights. Meanwhile, as a signatory to Fourth Geneva Convention under Article 1, Canada has the obligation to remain resolute that the Convention is upheld in all circumstances (ICRC).

As the health of several prisoners begins to seriously deteriorate, as reported by the Palestinian Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs, (Ma’an News 2017), I urge you to act now to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law and pressuring it to recognize the Palestinian prisoners’ basic human rights demands.

Regards,
