SAIA York is pleased to welcome David Sheen and Saron Ghebressellassie to speak about racism and incitement under Israeli apartheid.
David Sheen is an independent journalist, filmmaker, and York University alumnus from Toronto. Sheen began blogging when he first moved to Israel in 1999 and later went on to work as a reporter and editor at the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz. Sheen will give a lecture and slideshow presentation about Israeli incitement to racist violence, the focus of his on-the-ground reporting for the past four years. The core of the presentation concerns the dehumanizing discourse towards Palestinians, Africans, and other non-Jews by top Israeli political and religious leaders, which spiked during this summer’s assault on the Gaza Strip. Sheen gave a truncated version of the presentation as testimony at the recent session of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine.
Saron Ghebressellassie is a young lawyer and nationally-renowned advocate, earning her place in Chatelaine Magazine's "Top 80 Amazing Canadian Women to Watch" feature. Saron has launched her own firm, practicing in the areas of litigation and human rights. Saron will speak about Palestine and the South African apartheid experience.
